Port Don

The Setting
Port Don occupies one of the most spectacular residential sites on Tasmania's north-west coast. Perched above a dramatic river mouth where freshwater meets the sea, the property commands panoramic coastal views that shift with the tides, the weather, and the seasons. It's the kind of site that stops you in your tracks — and the kind that demands architecture worthy of its setting.
The clients came to Davies with a vision for a home that would honour this extraordinary location without competing with it. They wanted a dwelling that felt grounded and permanent, crafted from materials that would age gracefully alongside the coastal landscape. The design, developed in collaboration with the architectural team at 6ty, responds directly to the site's unique characteristics: the prevailing winds, the salt-laden air, the angle of the afternoon sun, and the need to frame specific views while sheltering outdoor living spaces from the elements.
Building on a coastal site of this calibre comes with significant engineering challenges. The foundation design had to account for the site's exposure to wind and weather, while every external material selection was evaluated for its resistance to salt corrosion and UV degradation. Davies' extensive experience building along Tasmania's coastline — from Hawley Beach to Greens Beach and beyond — meant the team understood these challenges intimately and could specify materials and construction methods with confidence.

Exterior
The exterior of Port Don makes an immediate impression. Vertical cladding creates a strong sense of height and presence, while carefully integrated stonework at the entry grounds the home in its coastal landscape. The combination of these materials — the precision of the metal cladding against the organic texture of natural stone — establishes a design language that is simultaneously contemporary and timeless.
The entry sequence is particularly well-considered. Approaching the front door, visitors are guided through a compressed, sheltered space before emerging into the home's expansive interior. This architectural technique — borrowed from the best of contemporary residential design — amplifies the impact of what lies beyond: the soaring ceilings, the flood of natural light, and the ever-present views of the river mouth and coastline.
Outdoor living spaces have been carefully positioned to take advantage of the site's microclimate. Protected from the prevailing winds by the building form itself, the deck and terrace areas allow the owners to enjoy the coastal air and views in comfort for much of the year. The landscaping works with the natural coastal vegetation rather than against it, creating a seamless transition from built environment to natural landscape.

Interior
Step inside Port Don and the interior finishes immediately add warmth and texture to the expansive spaces. The material palette has been carefully curated to complement the coastal setting — natural timbers, textured tiles, and warm-toned surfaces create an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and relaxed. Every room in the home has been oriented to capture a specific aspect of the view, so whether you're cooking in the kitchen, reading in the living area, or lying in bed, the landscape is always present.
The open-plan living, dining, and kitchen zone is the heart of the home, designed for the way modern families actually live. The kitchen features premium appliances, generous bench space, and a layout that allows the cook to remain part of the conversation while preparing meals. The living area flows naturally onto the outdoor entertaining space, blurring the boundary between inside and outside in a way that's characteristic of the best coastal architecture.
Curved walls in key interior spaces add a sculptural quality that softens the home's contemporary lines. These aren't decorative affectations — they're deliberate design moves that guide movement through the home and create moments of visual interest. The feature tiles in the bathrooms and wet areas have been selected with the same care as any artwork, adding colour and personality to spaces that are often treated as afterthoughts.
The ever-changing vistas of the river mouth mesmerise from virtually every room. Watching the tides shift, the light change, and the weather roll in across the water is an experience that never gets old — and it's been designed into the very DNA of this home. Port Don isn't just a house with a view; it's a home that has been shaped by its view, responding to the landscape at every level of its design.
